Standards Based Grading

A Note From Mrs. Nixon:

As you are aware, our district is transitioning over to standards-based grading with a heavy focus on student proficiency. This report card is student-centered. Students will own their learning. Though all standards are taught, essential standards become the focus.

There are 4 performance levels. This means percentages will no longer be entered into Skyward. Assignments are given as practice to demonstrate mastery of essential standards, but common grade level assessments are what will be recorded in Skyward. Kindergarten thru sixth grade teachers will have these essential standards posted on our website. Students have all year to master them.

We know that some students will be able to show proficiency with only a few measures, while other students need more reteaching and intervention steps before reaching proficiency. Teachers will collect and show evidence to support the assigned proficiency level and they will let you know as your child’s level changes. Our goal is to help Herriman students reach proficiency in the essential standards before they move on to a new grade. We want to partner with parents to make this a reality. If you have further questions, please feel free to peruse our website, ask a teacher, or meet with administration.
